PURPOSE:To realize excellent picture processing independently of reduction/ magnification processing. CONSTITUTION:A picture processing section is provided with a magnification processing section executing reduction/magnification and a spatial filter section 4 converting a spatial frequency characteristic of picture information and selectors 5, 6 selecting the sequence of picture processing so that the magnification processing section 3 comes faster than the spatial filter section 4 in the reduction mode and the magnification processing section 3 comes later than the spatial filter section 4 in the magnification mode. A picture discrimination section 1 discriminates a character area, an intermediate tone picture area and a dot picture area to select a frequency conversion characteristic (edge emphasis, smoothing) of the spatial filter section 4 based on the result of discrimination. In the case of a dot picture in the reduction mode, the signal passes through a 2nd spatial filter 8 before the magnification processing by a selector 9 to execute averaging of two picture elements. |
