<p>PURPOSE:To prevent the deterioration in the strength of optical fibers applied with carbon coats by passing an inert gas within a pipe consisting of a dielectric substance and providing approximately the central part of the pipe with a spacing for inserting the fibers. CONSTITUTION:The upper surfaces of a pair of placing bases installed to face each other are recessed and provided with placing grooves 3 having a V shape in section in such a manner that these grooves exist on the same one line in a longitudinal direction. The pipe 6 consisting of the dielectric is provided with an injection port 7 for injecting the inert gas. A slit 8 which is the spacing notched perpendicularly from above and below at the center of the pipe 6 faces the placing grooves 3. The bare optical fibers are exposed by removing the coating parts at the front ends of the carbon coated fibers 12. These bare optical fibers are positioned within the slit 8 of the pipe 6 and the fibers 12 are placed in fixing grooves 10. Covers 11 are then put thereon to fix the fibers. He which is the inert gas is then passed from the injection port 7 and a voltage is applied to electrodes 5 to the extent of preventing melting of the glass part of the fibers 12 to make arc discharge, by which the carbon coats are thermally decomposed and removed.</p> |
