PURPOSE: To provide high compression speed and a high compression rate by using an associative storage device CAM for retrieving redundancy in a text. CONSTITUTION: Pointer data has an offset value and a length value. A method for detecting and outputting pointer data is the method for compressing the text and it has a process for continuously storing a part of the text in a position which can be address-designated and for continuously comparing an input character from the text, which follows a part of the text stored in CAM 122, with a part of the text stored in CAM 122 until the failure of matching occurs, a process for deciding the length value by counting the number of matching until the failure of matching occurs, a process for deciding the offset value based on the position of the characters of a matched phrase against the positions of the corresponding characters on the matched phrase and a process for providing the offset value and the length value. |
