In order to acquire images around an elongate object, the direction of this elongate object is identified. For this purpose, an image point (24) of a location s (25) of the elongate object is located and identified in a first image (20). The image (27) of the epipolar line (26) connecting the focus of the X-ray tube to the identified point is plotted in the 2nd image (21). A point (28) which is the homologue of the point identified in the first image is located and identified on this image of the epipolar line. The spatial position of the characteristic point is deduced from identification of these points. This operation is repeated for a second characteristic location (29).
