A rotary brush 1 for a sweeper comprises a central roller 2 and annular brushes 3 fitted thereto. Such a brush is used for cleaning pavements, roads, paths and the like. In certain situations it is desirable to be able to vary the length of the brush 1, which will normally be wider than a tractor or the like, to which the brush 1 is fitted. In order to achieve such a variation the central roller 2 is made up of two elements 18, 18' capable of telescoping in one another, and the annular brushes 3 are separated from one another by spring elements 25, which in use exert a compressive force on the adjacent annular brushes 3. A even distribution of the brushes 3 over the brush is thereby obtained regardless of the length of the brush 1. <IMAGE>
