PURPOSE:To make a system in which an optical ATM exchange is operated high in speed and large in scale. CONSTITUTION:This optical exchange system where the path of a BPW-encoded optical cell is set in an asynchronous transfer mode, is provided with an address image forming part such as a diffraction grating which forms an optical strength pattern image 7 from a header 6 of the optical cell. Also, the system is provided with an optical switch 3 which selects a reference pattern preliminarily made to correspond to the address information of the header 6 based on the optical strength pattern image 7, obtains the address information of the header necessary for the setting of the path in a batch, receives both a control light emitted corresponding to the obtained address information and a payload 5 separated from the input cell in a vertical direction by optical switch elements arrayed like a matrix for each path, and forms the path of the optical switch elements which receive the control light. |
