PURPOSE:To provide a short optical pulse generator capable of generating a short optical pulse, which has a fully large peak power, is small in a duty ratio and is completely subjected to transform limit, by ultra-high speed repeats which are required. CONSTITUTION:A short optical pulse generator is provided with a semiconductor laser 12 which generates a single-longitudinal mode optical pulse, an oscillator 3 to enable the laser 12 to perform a gain switching operation, a multiplying device 13 to multiply an output signal from the oscillator 3, an absorption semiconductor modulator 4, which is driven on the basis of an output signal from the device 13 and deletes a nonlinear chirp component of an optical pulse which is outputted from the laser 12, and a normal dispersed light medium 14 to compress a pulse width of an optical pulse which is outputted from the modulator 4. The laser 12 and the modulator 4 may be integrated. |
