<p>A stowable hood (1, 2) on a vehicle may be extended from a stowed to an operative position. The hood comprises a frame supporting a layer of flexible material (1) having a number of members (5, 6 and 7) which are moved by pressure fluid operable rams and cylinders (12) to extend the frame. After extension, a U-shaped member (4) is moved by pressure fluid operable rams and cylinders (11) to tension the hood. The force necessary to extend the hood is therefore only that necessary to draw the hood without tension and is therefore less than it would otherwise be. A less powerful extension mechanism is therefore required and the stress on the components of this mechanism and those of the hood are reduced.</p> |
