The invention relates to a method and device for measuring the configuration of living animals and body parts of animals for slaughter for the purpose of mechanising and automating the operations concerned with slaughtering and precisely cutting up cows and pigs. In terms of the method the object is achieved by virtue of the fact that the signals of standard animals or of standard parts can be detected by means of tactile sensors. These sensors can be used at various working places which are suitable for automation in slaughterhouse lines. Using the signals received, for example, identification of the bodies of animals for slaughter, which are lying on conveyor belts, and determination of size can be carried out. The device of the invention is described in Figure 1. Arranged before the anaesthetising station 1 is a measuring channel 2. Using the measuring levers 6 the weight and the current position of the animals in the channel 2 can be measured. Using the feeler elements 17, 20 and 28 which are arranged on the measuring levers 15, 19 and 27 and completely surround the animal, the contours of the animal can be determined. <IMAGE>
