The invention relates to a novel tetrahydrofuranylpropionic acid which is obtained by chemical routes as a subunit of the pamamycin antibiotic complex. To do this, the pamamycin complex is first prepared by fermentation of a microorganism, Streptomyces aurantiacus JA 4570. Pamamycin is then hydrolytically cleaved and the tetrahydrofuranylpropionic acid is isolated in pure form or in a mixture with a homologous minor component by the use of chromatographic methods. On account of the known suitability of fatty acids as bioactive compounds or constituents of pharmaceuticals, this novel carboxylic acid is potentially very highly suitable for the production of antiatherosclerotics, hypocholesterolemics, anti-inflammatories and as a chiral starting product for the synthetic preparation of pharmaceuticals. The novel tetrahydrofuranylpropionic acid is furthermore able in the form of suitable derivatives to promote the passive transport of organic cations and thus potentially to improve the bioavailability of cationic therapeutics.
