A method for digital data transmission is indicated in which the symbols of a data stream to be transmitted and sequences of shaping bits are supplied to a pulse amplitude modulator in which the signal to be transmitted, during digital/analog conversion, undergoes signal shaping for signal values with an approximately Gaussian distribution. The shaped analog output signal of the pulse amplitude modulator is fed to a pre-emphasiser which counteracts the signal distortion due to the transmission path and whose output signal is transmitted via the connected transmission path. The transmitted signal is sampled at the end of the transmission path, is then further processed and fed to a discriminator. To achieve maximum signal shaping gain, the symbols of the data stream to be transmitted and the shaping bits are fed directly and separately from one another via different inputs to the pulse amplitude modulator without the intermediate connection of a scrambler.
