The invention relates to an anti-theft device as an immobiliser on a motor vehicle. The latter comprises a manually activated immobiliser switch (28) by means of which the operation of a component which is necessary for the vehicle to function, in particular an electronic engine control unit (31) is blocked. According to the invention it is proposed that an anti-theft security code is stored in a memory of the combined instrument electronics (11). An enabling code can be entered as a number by means of a control element (9, 10) for inputting digital variables. A comparison of the stored anti-theft security code with the enabling code which is input manually is carried out in the combined instrument electronics (11). When identity is established, the operation of the blocked component (31) is enabled again. Thus, an effective anti-theft device which can be actuated as desired can be realised in a simple and cost-effective way.
