The invention relates to a process for the treatment of carbon-containing material, preferably wood from deciduous trees, in a continuous single-stage process in a shaft furnace which can be impinged by thermal energy via a combustion chamber and has at least one reactor, an energetically favourable mode of operation being achieved. For this purpose it is provided that a pyrolysis and/or an activation of the carbon-containing material is carried out. <IMAGE>
