In the case of a hand-operated apparatus for the profile-shaping of handrails for ballustrades made of wood, in particular in the region of string wreaths, the handrails enclosing a given angle of inclination with the horizontal, provision is made for two upper guide members to be individually adjustable in such a way that, with said guide members in constant contact with the upper side of the handrail, the axis of rotation of a profile cutter extends essentially always vertically in space in dependence on the angle of inclination of the handrail, and for a lower guide member to be adjustable in such a way that it supports the underside of the handrail essentially at the centre between the upper guide members acting on its upper side and thereby stabilises the apparatus on the handrail.
