SPATIAL LIGHT MODULATORS

The performance of spatial light modulators (SLM) is improved by use of lenslets associated with each pixel of the SLM. The invention comprises an SLM (50) having an array of pixels (53), each pixel having associated therewith one or more lenslet (54) in an array (55) of lenslets. In some application a pinhole aperture (94) and/or a second lenslet array is additionally associated with each pixel. Various devices are provided, e.g. improved contrast SLMs, mono and multicolour displays, improved switching speed matrix vector multipliers.
