A vehicle which can perform both automatic speed control based on a vehicle speed and automatic speed control based on a vehicle spacing has a single operating button with a SET switch, a RESUME switch and an IDLE switch. To enable the single operating button to set both a desired vehicle speed and a desired vehicle spacing, the procedure is as follows: when the SET switch is operated during automatic speed control based on the vehicle speed, the vehicle speed set at the time of operation or at the end of the switching operation is the desired vehicle speed; when the SET switch is operated during automatic speed control based on a vehicle spacing, the vehicle spacing set at the time of operation or at the end of the switching operation is the desired vehicle spacing.
