<p>Spent silica hydrogel can be regenerated by (a) contacting the spent hydrogel with a solvent consisting of an alkane, a polar solvent or a mixture thereof; (b) separating the hydrogel from the solvent; and (c) desolventising the recovered hydrogel.</p>
