Substituted amidine derivatives of structure (I) or a salt thereof in which: R is a group of formula (i) in which R<1> is an optionally substituted phenyl ring or an optionally substituted 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring containing one or two heteroatoms selected from oxygen, nitrogen or sulphur; R<2> is hydrogen or C1-6 alkyl; R<3> is hydrogen, halogen, C1-6 alkyl or C1-6 alkoxy; or R is a group of formula (ii) in which R<1>, R<2> and R<3> are as defined in formula (i) and X<1>, X<2> and X<3> are all CH groups or one of X<1>, X<2> and X<3> is nitrogen and the others are CH groups; processes for their preparation, pharmaceutical compositions containing them, and their use in therapy, in particular as gastric acid secretion inhibitors, are described.
