A filter or HME has a housing with a separate heater (5) retained on the housing by a coupling (42) engaging a flange (52) on the heater. The heater has a helical wire heating element (54) and a layer of insulating material (57) on an outside surface. The heater warms the internal surface of the wall of the housing to reduce condensation.
