PURPOSE:To shorten a tool exchange time by a method wherein two different sets of grasping claws in a direction extending at right angles to a tool exchange arm are provided and tools mounted on the outer periphery and the side of a turret and pointing in two directions are exchanged from each other. CONSTITUTION:The tool T of a magazine pot 13 divided in the tool exchange position of a tool magazine 9 and pointing to the main spindle side in the direction of a Z-axis is exchanged with a tool T divided in the tool exchange position of a tool rest 3 positioned in a first Z-axis position and pointing to the main spindle side in a Z-axis direction of the side of a turret by means of grasping claws 19A and 19B for a tool pointing to the Z-axis directions of the two ends of an arm through movement of a tool exchange arm 17 in a Z-axis direction, a direction (a U-axis direction) extending at right angles with a Z-axis having a given angle with a Z-axis direction, or an X-axis direction. Further, the tool of a magazine pot divided in a tool exchange position and pointing to the turret side in a U-axis direction or an X-axis direction as a result of the tool being revolved in a 90 deg. arc and a tool pointing to the magazine side in the X-axis direction or the X-axis direction of the tool rest positioned in a second Z-axis position are exchanged by means of grasping claws 18a and 18b for a tool positioned closer to the two ends of the arm and pointing to a direction extending at right angles with the Z-axis. |
