Method or apparatus for joining plastic components through relative motion between the components generates friction sufficient to fuse the components, the components may be tubular and fit one within the other in the joint region. The two components may be rotated relative to one another by a drive shaft (24 fig 1) and an electric motor (16 fig 1). The inner component may be held on a radially expandable rotatable mandrel 30 to press the two components together in the region of the joint, the outer component being held fixed on a support table (12 fig 1) and restrained against the radial force of the mandrel by retaining collar 56. The inner component may be a bollard stem 50 and the outer component a bollard head 52. The relative motion may be reciprocating or orbiting. The two components may be made from polyethylene or ethylene vinyl acetate. The apparatus may include a brake to stop the drive shaft and may be microprocessor controlled. <IMAGE> |
