PURPOSE: To provide an X-ray imaging agent which is prepd. by combining a specific contrast medium and polymer substances contg. polar electrons combined with bivalent cations and capable of forming films on the gastrointestinal tracts and uniformly coats the soft tissues to be subjected to an X-ray inspection for diagnosis. CONSTITUTION: This X-ray contrast medium for oral or retrograding inspection contains the polymer substances which have the atoms (more adequately O, N, S) contg. the polar electrons combined with the bivalent cations (Ca<++> , Mg<++> , Zn<++> , Ba<++> ) and are capable of forming the films on the gastrointestinal tracts and the X-ray contrast medium of formula I (Z is H, halo, 1 to 20C alkyl, cycloalkyl, lower alkoxy, alkoxy, carbonyl, cyano; R is 1 to 25C alkyl, cycloalkyl, halo lower alkyl, etc.; (x) is 1 to 4; (n) is 1 to 5; (m) is 1 to 15: p is 1 to 20) or its medicinally permissible salts. The x-ray contrast medium of the formula I is bis(4-iodophenyl)ether, etc., of polyethylene glycol-400. The polymer substances are preferably the anions of formula II, formula II, formula IV (R is a polymer chain M<++> is a bivalent cation).
