ELECTROCHEMICAL APPARATUS AND HYDROGEN GENERATION

PURPOSE:To produce hydrogen gas from a fuel containing methanol and water by a simple apparatus while generating little carbon monoxide. CONSTITUTION:A fuel containing at least methanol and water is brought into contact with catalyst-containing electrodes 102 placed at both of a pair of cation exchange membranes 101. Hydrogen ion is generated from methanol and water on the electrodes 102 by taking electrons out of the electrodes. Hydrogen ions pass through the cation exchange membranes 101, receive electrons on the other electrodes 103 and transformed to hydrogen molecule.
