The present invention relates to a process and an apparatus for processing waste food which arises in particular in large-scale canteens. In order to process this waste food into a form in which it can be reused or further used for example as animal feed, the present invention proposes a process and an apparatus where the solid waste food is first collected in a draining vessel where it can drain before it is classified, if necessary ground and then freeze-dried to form fine-grained granules which can then be further used appropriately packaged as animal feed.
