In a method for monitoring the function of an inlet or exhaust valve of an internal combustion engine with air mass flow sensor, the signal from the air mass flow sensor is monitored for selected cylinders and compared with the signals for the other cylinders. In the event of a significant deviation of the signal from that of the other cylinders, data is derived on the defective valve.
