In a picking-up device for a walking aid, for example a cane, crutch or the like, with a gripping arm that can be pivoted upward from a starting position into a gripping position, a triggering device which triggers the upwardly pivoting movement of the gripping arm upon contact of the falling cane with the ground, as well as devices for fixing the gripping arm in its starting position and its upwardly pivoting movements, the gripping arm (10) is pivotable in a housing (5) separated from the cane about an axis that is transverse relative to the cane in both directions by about 90 DEG . For transmission of these pivoting movements toothed wheels and a triggering slide (16) with its toothed strip (17) are mounted so as to engage each other tightly in this housing (5). This triggering slide which is displaceably guided in the housing in the plane of the toothed wheels and at right angles to the axles (13, 14) thereof projects by its ends on opposite sides from the housing, so that one of the slide ends touches the floor when the cane is dropped, so that the triggering slide slides back and thus the gripping arm is pivoted upwards. <IMAGE>
