Method for disposing of polycyclic aromatic compounds from contaminated particulate materials by biodegradation

A process for disposing of polycyclic aromatic compounds from contaminated particulate materials by biodegradation is described, in which the materials are contacted with an aqueous solution of methylpurines and the biodegradation of the polycyclic aromatic compounds is effected by the microorganisms contained in the particulate materials and/or by addition of microorganisms capable of biodegradation. According to a preferred embodiment, caffeine is used as methylpurine and bacteria and/or moulds are used as microorganisms.
