The method serves for the operation of an electromagnetically liftable spring pressure brake with a brake rotor rotationally fixed on the axle to be braked but axially displaceable thereon, which rotor is arranged between an armature plate acted upon by at least one pressure spring in the direction of the brake rotor, which plate, according to the force of the pressure spring, can be attracted to a magnetic part with that side remote from the brake rotor during its release, and a counter pressure plate fixed to the chassis. For a reduced brake application, the energising current of the electromagnet is briefly interrupted and reconnected after the release of the armature plate from the magnetic part according to the braking conditions. In order to bring about a reliable release of the armature plate from the magnetic part of the lifting magnet before the energising current is reconnected, the polarity of the energising current or the d.c. voltage correspondingly applied to the electromagnet is reversed before reconnection.
