There is described a device for the thermal treatment of free-flowing bulk material, e.g. earth, sand and the like, in which the bulk material is fed via a shaft (22) with screen decks (40) to a burner device (12). In the burner device (12) the bulk material falls freely through a drop chamber (30) in which the bulk material is directly exposed to the flames (34) by burner plates (28) delimiting the drop chamber (30). The hot waste gases from the burner rise meanderingly between the screen decks (40) in the shaft (22) and preheat the bulk material. <IMAGE>
