Two carriages (3, 12) are arranged side by side in a horizontally traversable manner on a horizontal guideway (2) of a lathe. The first carriage (3) carries a headstock (4) to which a fixed tool holder (8) is allocated. The second carriage (12) carries a fixed headstock (10) opposite a tool carrier (10). In one end position, the headstock (4) can receive a workpiece (6a) from a work-transfer device (9). Correspondingly, a gripper hand (14) in the tool carrier (11) can deposit a workpiece (6c) on a work-transfer device (13) at the other side of the lathe. <IMAGE>
