The invention relates to a method for applying a surface image or script or decorative element to structured substrates, the surface image or the script or decorative element consisting of a carrier film or coating layer provided with adhesive and pull-off film which is pressed onto the substrate by means of a contact pressure roller. The carrier film or coating layer, at least partially freed from the pull-off film, is laid or placed on the grease-free substrate with its adhesive layer facing the substrate, and is pressed onto the substrate, without the formation of bubbles, under active contact pressure and with simultaneous application of hot air to the surface image or decorative layer. Moreover, the invention relates to an apparatus for applying a surface image or script or decorative element, consisting of a support film or coating layer with an adhesive layer and pull-off film, to structured substrates with a contact pressure roller in order to carry out the method, wherein a hot air source (6), directed towards the film (11) or coating layer, is assigned to the contact pressure roller (2).
