In the purification in particular of cooling water for a heat exchanger it is known to build rotationally symmetrical screens into the cooling water feed line and to clean these screens by backwash shoes arranged so as to be able to rotate. In the event that the screen surface is blocked, it must be ensured that emergency operation is possible via a bypass using unfiltered liquid. According to the invention it is proposed that bypass orifices 4 are arranged upstream of the screen insert 3 in the direction of flow, which orifices are covered in normal operation by a sliding cover 5 and are opened in the fault condition by pretensioned actuating springs 9. <IMAGE>
