Friction welding a support pin (13) to the surface of a refrigerator wall consists of locating the pin through the wall from the outside so that its flange (14) is away from the visible internal wall of the refrigerator. Pref. the flange has a recess (16) to accept plastically flowing metal from the friction welding area. The transition radius from pin to flange is greater than that of the wall bore exit (12). ADVANTAGE - The plastic flow of material does not happen on the visible side of the wall and thereby spoil the appearance of the protruding pin. The flange of the pin can have a recess (15) to enable the introduction of a rotating tool during welding. The pin can be located near curved surfaces.
