The object underlying the invention is to improve an apparatus of the type characterised at the outset to the extent that enabling an enhancement in the quality of highly polluted waste water (effluent) is ensured by low expenditure in terms of construction. This object is achieved according to the invention by a large proportion of macroporous purifying material 6 making possible backwashing running in the same direction, so that the apparatus can also be operated "open".
