A vacuum head grips the web between the supply and winding station. The vacuum head comprises a first surface through which vacuum is applied to grip the web behind the end. A vacuum finger is extendable from the vacuum head for gripping the end. The vacuum finger comprises a second surface through which vacuum is applied to grip the end when the vacuum finger is extended. A drive extends and withdraws the vacuum finger.
