The flow of coolant in an ic engine is regulated 20 in accordance with the measured peak combustion pressure 12 for a cycle of the engine. Coolant flow is thus controlled to optimise the cylinder inner wall temperature for current operating conditions, the cylinder inner wall temperature being estimated using a formula linking the heat rejection per engine cycle to the measured peak combustion pressure 12 and coolant temperature 16.
