The present invention relates to lock or latching mechanisms wherein the mechanism is capable of being placed in a latched position and selectably the operating handle can be rotated to either delatch mechanism or can be rotated without affecting the latched condition of the mechanism, the latching mechanism comprising a latching tongue (11) movable to an extended latching mechanism but being capable of being withdrawn to a delatched position, an operation mechanism (29) to move the latching tongue (11), the operation mechanism (29) being formed by at least a first member (31) and a second member (30), the first member (31) being rotated in response to rotation of external operating handles or the like and the second member (30) being engageable or disengageable with the first member (31) so as to either rotate with the first member (31) or move independently of the first member (31) and selectably actuable means (20, 28, 33, 39, 40) to effect interengagement or disengagement of said first and second members (31, 30). |
