Contaminated material such as soil or sludge is remediated by injecting a su itable remediation fluid into the material during excava tion of the contaminated material with a trenching tool. The remediation fluid is injected into the contaminated material through an inje ction means, preferably a plurality of injection nozzles positioned along the leng th of the trenching tool. The thus treated material is b ackfilled or deposited directly into the trench excavated by trenching tool thereby obvia ting the need for off-site disposal. The constituent rem ediation agents in the remediation fluid may be adjusted to adapt to varying site con ditions and contaminants. The remediation fluid may al so be heated to accomplish volatile stripping of the contaminated material or to a ctivate microbial agents in a low temperature environmen t. |
