In a process for the treatment of compostable material on a storage area, with a movable loading bridge spanning the latter at a distance, in particular with a gantry-type composting bridge, on which a conveying element movable relative to that storage area is provided for producing a folded heap in layers, a thin layer of composting material of a height of, for example, 40 to 100 mm is produced, further layers of this type are laid onto this and a plurality of these layers are jointly loosened in steps transversely to their laying direction. According to the invention, the reduction in the original height of the folded heap which occurs after a lengthy storage time as a result of rotting loss is compensated by material extracted from this.
