<p>A compact and efficient spray cooling system is provided for cooling one or more heat sources. The system uses at least one atomizer (42) arranged in an array to deliver a fine spray across a wide distribution to impinge upon the surface to be cooled (60). The spray maintains a thin liquid film (32) upon the cooled surface where heat is transferred in a phase change process. The momentum of the spray is used to move the liquid and vapor resulting from the heat transfer process to the edges of the heat source(s) (74) where it is removed from the system through a fluid removal port (82). Use of spray momentum allows the system to be used in transportation, avionics and space applications where adverse gravity conditions exist. The atomizer array is closely spaced to the heat source due to development of the spray in a short distance allowing for a compact system package.</p> |
