A gear position detector employs digital switches 7 - 9, eg a micro switch etc, to sense the plane 17, 18 of a gear lever in a H layout, and the gear engaging direction of the gear lever in the plane is detected by an analogue sensor 13, eg rotary angle sensor, as greater accuracy is required for automotive clutch actuation. Switches 7 - 9 are axially spaced in module 4, mounted on gearbox housing 2, and are activated by cam 6 when selector shaft 1 is moved in the direction of arrow B. In order to engage a gear the shaft 1 is rotated in the direction of arrow A, this rotation results in the slotted shaft 15 being rotated, as it is keyed for rotation with sensor 13, but is axially moveable relative to it, any movement results in a signal. Signals from switches 7 - 9 and sensor 13 are fed to a microprocessor having a learning program. A displacement sensor (14, fig 2) may replace sensor 13 and switches 7 - 9 may be arranged circumferentially (10 - 12, fig 2). <IMAGE>
