A zero superheat refrigeration apparatus and method uses a multistage centrifugal compressor (4) which has a casing (10) with an axial inlet portion (8) at one end gaseously coupled to receive refrigerant from an evaporator (58), at two-stage motor driven compression portion (6), and an outlet opening (34) gaseously coupled to deliver compressed refrigerant to a condenser (52). An electric motor assembly (17) is within the inlet portion (8) of the casing (10) and includes vanes (12) to transfer heat dissipated by the motor assembly (17) to the refrigerant. The refrigerant cools the motor assembly (17) and the heat from the motor assembly (17) evaporates any liquid refrigerant droplets, allowing the evaporator (58) to operate at a zero superheat condition. A shaft (22), which is coaxially arranged in the casing (10), couples the motor assembly (17) to a first rotor (24) providing a first compression stage and to a second rotor (26) providing a second compression stage. The geometric shape of the casing (10) allows vehicle center line mounting.
