The invention relates to such a method in which, in the course of a thread-connecting cycle, the drive device of the thread-connecting device executes a closed movement run-off of the time-coupled sequence. The object is to develop further such a method, so that the effectiveness of the splicing as a whole is increased. This object is achieved, according to the invention, in that the release of the splicing air is suppressed if the conditions necessary for a successful splicing operation are not present within the time-coupled sequence at the moment of release of the splicing air. These conditions can be the feed of the thread end located on the run-off bobbin side or run-on bobbin side, the presence of the necessary splicing pressure or of the necessary splicing temperature at a thermal splicer. In addition to the air used directly for splicing, under the conditions mentioned the opening air necessary for preparing the thread ends can also be suppressed. <IMAGE>
