<p>A high pressure pump (10) includes a housing (12) having a pump chamber (14) therein for receiving a pump piston (16), and a separate pressure housing (70) having a liquid pressure chamber (72) therein in fluid communication with a pump discharge flow line (52) within an outlet housing (68). A force transmitting piston (90) is provided within the pressure housing (70) and is movable along an axis substantially coincident with the central axis (18) of the pump piston (16) to place a desired load on each of a plurality of compression rods (60). The pump may be initially manufactured with the pressure housing, or a separate pressure housing may be added to an existing pump without modifying other pump components. According to the method of this invention, a control valve (80) in a compression line (74) is opened, the pump is activated, then the compression line is closed to maintain the compression rods under load.</p> |
