One face of the cutting insert forms the chip face while its peripheral sides form free faces. The chip face has a central chip breaker (13) with a chip breaker groove (14) shaped w.r.t. the plane defined by the cutting edges (12). The breaker and groove extend as a longitudinal rib (15) into a swarf removal region. Between the ribs or laterally to them are provided trough-shaped depression (56) and/or raised chip forming elements. The depressions and/or raised elements lie mirror-symmetrically to a line (16) halving the angle range of a cutting corner.
