The invention relates to a free-piston engine (1) with at least one converter (2), with at least one cylinder (3), with a piston (4) movable in the cylinder (3) and with a piston rod (5) connected to the piston (4), the converter (2) being provided with an armature (6) and a stator (7) and the piston rod (5) being connected to the armature (6). In order to compensate for the inertial and gas forces occurring in the combustion process and to make up for the flywheel moment absent in free-piston engines, according to the invention a mechanical spring system (8) is proposed, which interacts with the piston (4), stores energy in the working stroke of the piston (4) and delivers the stored energy, at least partially, to the piston (4) in the compression stroke. <IMAGE>
