A first set of special effect functions is selected, and start and finish keyframes containing start and finish parameters for the selected effects are specified. The effects can then be run using the start and finish parameters and the number of frames over which the effects are to take place. A second set of special effect functions may be similarly selected, the start and finish frames of the second set being different (but overlapping) those of the first. The two sets of special effects may then be run concurrently to produce complex special effects, eg a background scene has a border which changes smoothly from blue to red over the whole period of the effect, while a foreground scene is moved from a first location to a final location via three intermediate points; whilst the foreground scene moves from the first intermediate point to its final location the background scene changes smoothly from a first to a second video signal. <IMAGE>
