The invention relates to a letter file with a cover (10) preferably of stiff cardboard and a file mechanism (22) releasably securable to the inside of the file cover (10). To increase the capacity of the file and ensure easy interchangeability of the file mechanism, the invention proposes that the cover (10) have a recess (32) of the same size as the base plate (24) in which the base plate of the file mechanism is recessed and removably secured.
