Process for cleaning flue gases containing elementary mercury.

In a waste disposal unit sludge is incinerated to produce waste gases which contains mercury. The novelty is that the gases pass through a single or multi-stage washing system using an alkaline solution to remove acid gases, and that the mercury is subsequently separated in a second-stage washer using an aqueous acid solution. Pref. the second-stage washer uses chloride and an oxidant. A further washing stage reduces the HCl emissions value to less than 10 mg/m2 in the normal condition.
