Water-based coating process for isocyanate-based polyurea-urethane polymers

An aqueous coating process is disclosed for preparing polymer-coated medical and laboratory devices which are characterized by their biocompatibility and resistance to nonspecific protein adsorption. The process involves placing a prepolymer in an aqueous solution, depositing the solution on a substrate, and forming a hydrated polymer coating on said substrate. The polymers of the coating are polyurea-polyurethane polymers prepared from high molecular weight isocyanate end-capped prepolymer substantially or exclusively comprised of ethylene oxide units.
